For this fun and highly practical project in Swanley, we designed and built a completely bespoke children’s cabin bed tailored around an awkward bulkhead in the room. The brief was simple: maximise storage, create a raised bed that felt exciting, and build something durable enough for years of play. And, of course, match the very specific theme… a little Avengers fan with a soft spot for Spider-Man.
Working With the Space
The bedroom included a substantial bulkhead that previously made furniture layout difficult. Instead of fighting it, we built the raised bed over the bulkhead, transforming what would normally be a wasted section of the room into a clever foundation for the design.

Above this structure, we created a spacious sleeping area, fully enclosed on all sides for safety and painted in a bold, bright red chosen specially to match Spider-Man’s iconic suit.
Smart Storage Everywhere
When space is limited, every inch matters — and this cabin bed delivers storage from top to bottom:
- Full-width drawer:
Built directly above the bulkhead, this deep drawer glides out effortlessly and is ideal for bedding, clothes or toys. - “Spidey Hole” hideout:
Beneath the drawer is a secret hidey-hole, the perfect den for imaginative play. A playful nod to the hero of the room, we called it the Spidey Hole. Kids love small spaces and role-play, so this feature will be well-used for years. - Staircase drawers:
The steps leading to the raised bed double as pull-out drawers. Each tread is a full storage compartment, using push-to-open runners to keep the entire staircase handle-free and streamlined. - Open shelving:
Built into the side of the frame for easy everyday access.

Additional Fitted Furniture
On the opposite side of the room, we installed a bespoke full-height wardrobe along with a matching wall shelf to increase storage even further. Together with the cabin bed, the entire room is now completely transformed, practical, organised, and packed with character.

A Fun, Functional Space Built to Last
Everything was constructed from durable materials, hand-finished, and installed to Leechcroft’s usual high standards. The bright red finish gives the furniture a premium look while still being hard-wearing enough for a young superhero’s everyday adventures.
This project was particularly special, as it was built for my own son, which means I’ll have the joy of seeing it used exactly as intended. Watching him climb the steps, tuck toys into hidden drawers, and disappear into the Spidey Hole reminds me why thoughtful, imaginative design matters so much in children’s rooms. It’s not just furniture; it’s a space they grow with, play in, and make memories around.
