Making the Most of a Compact Understairs Space
This project in Tunbridge Wells focused on transforming a tight, awkward understairs area into a clean and highly functional concealed storage solution. The client wanted to maximise usable space without disrupting the flow of the hallway or drawing attention to the storage itself.
As with many of our understairs storage projects, the goal was to create something that feels completely integrated into the home, rather than an obvious add-on.
Clean Lines with Hidden Functionality
The external finish was designed to blend seamlessly with the existing staircase and skirting, creating a flush, uninterrupted look. All fronts were finished to match the surrounding décor, ensuring the installation sits quietly within the space.
Push-to-open mechanisms were used throughout, removing the need for handles and maintaining a minimal, contemporary appearance.

Smart Internal Configuration
Despite the limited footprint, the unit was carefully planned to deliver maximum storage efficiency. The layout includes three deep pull-out drawers, providing easy access to items that would otherwise be lost at the back of a traditional cupboard.
Alongside this, a separate cupboard section was incorporated, fitted with three internal shelves for additional storage flexibility.
This type of tailored approach is something we regularly apply across projects, from compact hallway solutions through to larger installations like our full-height understairs and hallway storage in Chelsea.
Maintaining Access to Services
A key consideration on this project was retaining access to the gas meter and fuse board. The design was adapted to ensure these remained fully accessible without compromising the overall appearance or usability of the storage.
This balance between practicality and finish is a core part of our bespoke carpentry approach, ensuring every installation works as well as it looks.
The End Result
The finished installation delivers discreet, high-capacity storage within a previously underutilised area. The clean, handleless design allows the unit to blend seamlessly into the hallway, while the internal layout ensures it performs exceptionally well in day-to-day use.
