Solid Oak Staircase Renovation with Slatted Balustrade in Chislehurst

Transforming a Central Feature of the Home

This project in Chislehurst involved a full staircase renovation, turning a basic structural staircase into a standout architectural feature within a modern family home.

The brief was to introduce warmth, quality materials, and a clean contemporary look, while ensuring the staircase tied in seamlessly with the rest of the property’s internal finishes.

Working as part of our wider home improvement projects, the staircase was completely reworked using solid oak throughout.

Precision Craftsmanship with Solid Oak

The installation included new solid oak treads and risers, carefully fitted to achieve consistent lines and a premium finish across the full flight. Every element was measured, cut, and installed to suit the exact geometry of the existing staircase.

The balustrade was constructed using solid oak newel posts and vertical spindles (uprights), creating a clean, modern slatted appearance that allows light to pass through while maintaining safety and structure.

This style has become increasingly popular in contemporary interiors, offering a balance between openness and definition within the space.

Integrated Slatted Feature Wall

Running alongside the staircase, a full-height oak slatted feature was installed, continuing the vertical lines and enhancing the architectural feel of the hallway. This not only complements the staircase itself but also helps visually zone the space.

Attention to detail was key here, ensuring spacing, alignment, and finish remained consistent from bottom to top.

Concealed Understairs Storage

A subtle but highly functional addition to this project was the integration of concealed understairs storage. Push-to-open doors were used to maintain a completely handleless finish, keeping the storage visually hidden within the structure.

This approach mirrors techniques used in our understairs storage projects, where practicality is delivered without compromising the overall design.

Working Within a Live Family Home

As this was a family home, precautionary measures were taken throughout the installation to ensure the open hallway remained safe during works. This included temporary guarding and careful staging of the project to minimise disruption.

This level of planning is essential when carrying out structural carpentry in lived-in environments.

A Seamless Finish

The completed staircase blends perfectly with the home’s existing oak internal doors and finishes, creating a cohesive and high-end result throughout the property.

The end result is more than just a staircase, it’s now a defining feature of the home, combining durability, craftsmanship, and modern design.
