Made-to-Measure Furniture to Fit an Irregular Period Room
This project involved designing and building a fully bespoke run of fitted bookcases and cabinetry for a character property in Tunbridge Wells. The main challenge was working with an irregular-shaped room and creating a single, seamless piece of furniture that felt as though it had always belonged there.

Everything was designed and built from scratch to follow the lines of the room precisely, making the most of the available space without forcing symmetry where it didn’t naturally exist.
Finished in Farrow & Ball Green Smoke, the colour choice sits comfortably within the period of the property and pairs beautifully with the existing herringbone timber flooring. The muted tone adds depth without overwhelming the space, allowing the detailing to do the talking.

Thoughtful Detailing & Integrated Lighting
The design incorporates low-level cupboards to provide practical, concealed storage, with open shelving above for books and decorative pieces. Subtle detailing was added to the uprights and top sections to reflect the architectural features already present in the room, helping the furniture blend seamlessly with the surrounding cornicing and proportions.
Integrated lighting was installed by our electrician, including brass wall-mounted lamps and a picture light positioned over the feature wall section. These touches add warmth and highlight key areas of the furniture, as well as the framed artwork, bringing the whole installation to life in the evenings.

A Seamless, Made-to-Measure Result
Rather than being confined to a traditional alcove layout, this piece was designed as a continuous run of fitted furniture, carefully balanced to suit the room’s shape and scale. The result is a practical yet refined storage solution that enhances the space without dominating it.
This is a good example of how bespoke fitted furniture can be used to solve awkward layouts while still delivering a timeless, considered finish.
