For this project in Westerham, Kent, our clients wanted to transform an unused bay window area into a practical and elegant window bench with hidden storage. They provided a decorative lattice-style front panel, and our job was to design and build a fully functioning bench seat that worked seamlessly with it.
Creating a Functional, Made-to-Measure Window Seat
Using the supplied façade as the visual centrepiece, we built a custom bench seat that fits the bay perfectly. The internal framework was designed to create generous, easy-access storage space, while ensuring the unit remained solid, safe, and long-lasting.

Ventilation Designed for Real-Life Use
Because a working radiator sits behind the façade, maintaining efficient airflow was a critical part of the brief. Although the lattice panel provides front ventilation, we also added discreet ventilation slots along the top of the bench seat.
This top-side ventilation ensures:
- The radiator can still circulate heat even when the storage compartment is full
- Warm air isn’t blocked from rising into the room
- Long-term radiator performance and energy efficiency are protected
This detail means the unit works perfectly in day-to-day use, not just in theory.

Hydraulic Lift-Up Storage
To make accessing the storage easy and safe, the seat is fitted with hydraulic lifting struts, allowing the lid to open smoothly and remain supported while in use. It’s ideal for storing cushions, throws, or anything that needs to be kept tidy but close to hand.

Finishing Touches
The bench was painted in a clean white finish, colour-matched to the existing skirting, so the new installation looks completely built-in. The finished piece blends beautifully with the bay window, adding comfort, character, and practical storage without disrupting the aesthetic of the room.
