For this New Eltham project, we transformed a bare, underused utility space into a beautifully organised, highly functional room designed around modern family living. The brief was simple: maximise storage, streamline the layout, and introduce a premium finish that makes the room feel warm rather than purely practical.
A Fresh Start With a Blank Canvas
Aside from a single existing cupboard and counter, the room was essentially a blank slate. We removed the old units and designed a complete, made-to-measure utility room installation that uses every inch of available space.
A new black quartz worktop now spans the width of the room, sitting perfectly over the client’s dryer and washing machine. This creates a seamless, uninterrupted surface for folding laundry, storing detergents and keeping the area tidy. Beneath the counter, we incorporated two additional cupboard spaces, making use of what would otherwise have been wasted gaps beside the appliances.
Full-Height Storage That Eliminates Dead Space
One of the standout features of this build is the height. Instead of stopping short, we extended all cabinetry right up to the ceiling, eliminating dust traps and dramatically increasing capacity.
The upper section features:
- Three individual cupboards, each fitted with double doors for wide, accessible openings.
- Adjustable internal shelving for flexible storage of linens, cleaning products, and household essentials.
- Open cubical storage above, ideal for baskets, bulky items, or visually appealing organisation.
This multi-tier layout balances practicality and aesthetics, giving the utility room a clean, polished feel.
A Modern Colour With Contemporary Detailing
The entire unit is painted in Farrow & Ball’s new shade ‘Scallop’, a warm, modern pink that gives the room an unexpectedly elegant character. It softens the harder textures of the appliances and quartz, making the utility room feel calm and cohesive.
The cabinetry includes subtle vertical routed detailing, adding depth and interest without overwhelming the small space.
A Highly Functional, Thoughtfully Designed Layout
Because utility rooms typically work hard, functionality was kept at the core of the design. The room now benefits from:
- Full-height cabinetry for maximum capacity
- Robust, easy-clean quartz worktop
- Integrated laundry appliance layout
- High-level open storage for seasonal or overflow items
- Durable paint and finishes built to withstand daily use
The result is a utility room that feels much bigger, far more organised, and genuinely enjoyable to use, a perfect example of what thoughtful bespoke carpentry can achieve, even in compact areas.
