Built entirely from premium Iroko hardwood, the structure combines an outdoor kitchen on one side with a concealed workshop and storage area on the other. The solid roof section was lined with GRP to ensure the space remains completely dry, even in heavy rain, while the open-slatted canopy filters natural light beautifully.
Every detail was made to measure, from the slatted panels that provide dappled shade to the pull-out Beech workbench hidden inside the workshop. Even the storage section was wired with outdoor electrical sockets, allowing tools or appliances to be used conveniently and safely. The result is a multi-purpose space that feels as refined as any interior, yet built to handle the elements with ease.
This project demonstrates how an outdoor structure can be both elegant and practical, offering dedicated zones for entertaining, working and relaxing all year round.
Multi-Level Decking and Layered Design
Decking is another way to redefine how a garden works, especially where ground levels vary. In Chevening, we created a striking multi-level decked terrace that transformed a steep, uneven garden corner into a seamless, usable space.
The area had previously been difficult to use due to the slope. After coordinating with a local tree service to clear shrubs and roots, we constructed a pressure-treated timber subframe that followed the natural gradient of the ground. This created distinct platforms for lounging and dining, each level carefully framed to maintain clean lines and structural strength.
The decking was finished in a hard-wearing, non-slip slate grey coating and fitted with subtle LED lighting recessed into the boards. As evening falls, the space comes alive, with the lighting defining each step and giving the area a calm, inviting atmosphere
What was once an awkward part of the garden has become a central feature of the home, proving that even challenging sites can become practical, stylish spaces with thoughtful carpentry.
Outdoor Bars and Entertaining Spaces
For those who love hosting, a bespoke outdoor bar can be the ultimate addition. Our garden bar project in Sevenoaks was built entirely from scratch, clad in American cedar and finished with Osmo UV-Protection Oil to preserve its warm colour and protect the timber from weathering.
Inside, we designed built-in shelving for glasses, bottles and accessories, along with an integrated refrigerator beneath the bar top. The structure sits on a newly laid patio, creating a polished, permanent space for entertaining friends and family.
This project shows that outdoor carpentry can deliver genuine functionality as well as style. The cedar cladding provides natural resistance to moisture, while the oil finish enhances longevity and brings out the wood’s golden tones. With proper care, it will remain an elegant centrepiece for many years to come.
Combining Pergolas, Decking and Storage
Some of the best outdoor spaces blend several carpentry elements into one cohesive design. In another Sevenoaks project, we combined a timber pergola, raised decking and a custom-built storage shed into a single installation at the end of a large garden.
The clients had two mature olive trees they wanted to keep, so every element of the build was planned around their root zones. We positioned the pergola posts carefully to preserve the trees, creating a shaded lounging area that feels natural and serene. The adjacent storage shed provides practical space for furniture, barbecue equipment and outdoor accessories, all neatly hidden but easy to access.
By combining multiple features into one design, we turned an unused patch of garden into a fully functional outdoor retreat that flows beautifully with the landscape.
Building for Comfort and Durability
