Bespoke Alcove Cabinets & Drinks Cabinet in Riverhead

Bespoke alcove cabinets & drinks cabinet in riverhead

A Made-to-Measure Storage Solution Around an Existing Fireplace

This bespoke cabinetry project was completed in Riverhead, Sevenoaks, with the brief to create practical storage either side of an existing fireplace while keeping everything visually balanced and in keeping with the room.

The solution was a pair of fully made-to-measure alcove units, designed to align neatly with the fireplace and surrounding walls so the finished installation feels built in rather than added on.

Drinks Cabinet with Mirrored Back & Integrated Storage

To the left-hand side, we built a dedicated drinks cabinet. This includes wine bottle storage above, hanging wine glass holders beneath, and a mirrored back panel to reflect light and give the cabinet a bit more depth. A solid walnut worktop provides a practical serving surface, with two low-level cupboards below and an additional enclosed cupboard above for less frequently used items.

Shelving & Display Storage with Subtle Lighting

On the right-hand side, we created a matching low-level cabinet topped with solid walnut, with open shelving above for books, ornaments and, in this case, LEGO models. Discreet RGB lighting was integrated into the shelving to add a soft ambient glow in the evenings without overpowering the room.

Finishes & Materials

All cabinetry was finished in Farrow & Ball All White, keeping the overall look clean and timeless. The solid walnut worktops introduce warmth and contrast, helping to soften the crisp painted finish and add real depth to the installation.

This combination works particularly well in bespoke joinery. Painted MDF provides stability and precision, while real timber worktops bring character, grain variation, and a sense of authenticity that simply can’t be replicated. Walnut in particular, has a richness that matures beautifully over time, making it an ideal choice for feature surfaces that are seen and used every day.

We often pair painted cabinetry with solid wood elements for this exact reason. If you’re interested in how we source and select distinctive timbers for our projects, you can read more in our blog on sourcing unique timber for furniture making.

The End Result

The finished installation frames the fireplace neatly, improves storage on both sides of the room, and introduces a dedicated drinks area without taking up additional floor space. A simple, well-considered layout that works around the existing architecture and adds both function and character to the room.
