Crafted from Solid English Oak with Seamless Hidden Storage
For this project in Westerham, our client wanted a contemporary media unit that would provide substantial storage without dominating the room. The result is a beautifully proportioned floating cabinet stretching almost the full length of the wall, creating a clean, minimalist appearance while offering an exceptional amount of concealed storage.
The centrepiece of this installation is the stunning solid English oak worktop, finished with its natural live (waney) edge. Every knot, grain pattern and undulation along the edge tells the story of the tree it came from, giving the furniture a character that simply cannot be replicated with manufactured materials. If you’re interested in why we place such importance on selecting quality timber, take a look at our guide to sourcing high-quality materials for bespoke carpentry.

Premium Materials Inside and Out
Whilst the statement worktop is crafted from solid English oak, the cabinetry itself is manufactured using high-quality American White Oak veneered boards. This combination provides outstanding stability and consistency while perfectly complementing the warmth and grain of the solid oak top.
The floating design allows the cabinet to appear almost weightless despite its impressive size, making the room feel larger and less cluttered. Shadow lines beneath the unit enhance this effect, giving the furniture a refined, architectural appearance.

Hidden Storage with Push-to-Open Doors
Behind the clean, handleless exterior lies a huge amount of practical storage. Push-to-open cabinet doors preserve the uninterrupted lines of the furniture while providing easy access to generous shelving for media equipment, games consoles, books, accessories and everyday household items.
By eliminating visible handles and unnecessary detailing, the focus remains firmly on the beautiful timber and craftsmanship, creating a piece that feels both contemporary and timeless.

The Difference Solid Timber Makes
One of the biggest advantages of using solid timber is that no two pieces are ever identical. The rich grain, natural knots and flowing live edge ensure this media unit is completely unique to its owners.
Unlike imitation wood finishes, solid English oak develops even more character over time, making it an investment that continues to look better for years to come. It’s one of the reasons many homeowners choose genuinely bespoke furniture over mass-produced alternatives, as discussed in our article on built-in vs freestanding furniture.
